Leaders Against Litter Campaign
The Sabine Parish Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Sabine Parish Policy Jury, Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, will hold its Fall “Leaders Against Litter” trash pickup on Saturday, September 20. The event will be held in the morning and conclude with a cookout for community participants at the Sabine Parish Tourist Commission Office around 11:30.
“We are excited about this opportunity to work with our local governmental agencies in an effort to make our communities more aware of the problem we have with litter on our highways and roads,” said Chamber President Buddy Wood. “The Chamber has committed to this project in the past and will continue to do so in the future, but having the support of the Jury, Sheriff and LDWF is more than we could have asked.”
Chamber Board members, along with civic groups such as Toledo Bend Lake Association and the Many Rotary Club, have long been participants in the trash pickups by forming teams and committing to specific sections of road. Wood indicated the key to the success of the effort is expanding the groups to include church and school groups, and individuals who want to get involved.
“We know we will probably never solve the problem of litter on our roads and highways,” said Chamber Vice President Gloria Thompson, who has always coordinated efforts with TBLA in and around Toledo Town. “But, we want to not only make our area look better by removing litter, but also make this an awareness campaign that hopefully will make people stop and think before throwing their litter in other than an appropriate litter disposal facility.”
The Police Jury offered help by way of a resolution as well as agreeing to participate in the cookout after the event. Sheriff Ronnie Richardson agreed to supply trash bags for those who participate while Wildlife and Fisheries officers will help patrol areas to assure the safety of participants in the areas they are gathering litter.
“It’s always exciting to have a joint effort to help better our parish,” Wood said. “We believe this is going to make a difference, and we urge all our Chamber members to get involved as well.”
Anyone wishing to participate should contact the Chamber office at 256-3523. Once the number of groups participating and roads being picked up are determined, trash bags will be distributed to them prior to the event.
